Negative Attitude... an epiphany

I was sitting at work today. I was really cold (The VA has been an icebox lately), my boss wanted me to finish some things up, it was getting late, I was starving... and I still had to do my 45 minute run before dinner. To make this worse, it was really cold out and the sidewalks were hidden under 2.5 feet of snow. I was NOT looking forward to this run. But then I had an epiphany...

I was not going to skip this workout. So I could do it one of two ways

1. Pissed off and miserable, wondering why I was out there and feeling sorry for myself

or

2. Go out an enjoy it. The sun was actually shining for the first time since I got back from Cali and my body was feeling pretty good. And on the bright side, I sure wasn't going to get dehydrated from the heat...

So I turned around my negative attitude (which was truly there for no reason other than to make me grumpy) and I actually drove home looking forward to getting my UnderArmour Cold Gear on one more time. And took comfort in the fact that it might be one of the last times this season I would have to wear it.

Training really is 95% mental. Embrace it.

;-)

Holy crap, way to turn that frown upside down.

Become one with the training (pain) :-) (as he assumes his Buddha pose). Positive attitudes are infectious, but only if you share...

Great attitude buddy! Cleveland weather will turn good soon and this will all just be a memory.

Hmmm, guess I am not the only one struggling with my negative attitude lately. I know it is linked to this crappy weather...so I will try to keep some of your beight perception in mind!

Nice, Jod. Remember what it says on your sidebar, "The journey to Ironman ends June 24, and I see to enjoy every minute of it." I think you did a good job yesterday choosing to focus on the positive. How was the run?

My favorite workouts go something like this..."I kinda feel like crap today...I'm tired and lethargic. Maybe I should skip my workout today." Fast foreward approx. one to two hrs. through an increased HR....."Man, I sure feel great. What's next?"

Thanks for the insight and inspiration Jodi!

Great way to look at the situation! It's so easy for us to make excuses and be miserable, but what do we gain from it? nada!

Nice job!

It helps when the sun comes out bright and shinning.

Amen! Staying positive is really hard sometimes though. Good for you for staying on it!

The negative training Gods must have been busy...they were all over me too. While I didn't have to battle the adversity of weather to get a workout in...I was dealing with quite a cloud of drag arse this morning. But thank goodness the fear of failure kicked in!

Good for sticking with it. It is SO mental. Thanks also for the tip about the 12 mile run this weekend. It was a good compromise. I did it and had minimal knee pain!
