Time to build up that mental game

I was feeling very confident and relaxed yesterday. I had another short run on the schedule and it felt fabulous! For the first 7 minutes... then my IT band flared. Of all things to worry about, that was one that I thought was a thing of the past. 10 ART treatments, rest and stretching and I thought it was gone.

So the past 24 hours I have spend alternating between feeling sorry for myself and scouring youtube for motivational videos.

But you know what? Screw the knee. The kneecap is healed and feels great. If the IT band wants to flare for 26 miles, let it flare! If I need to do some walking, I'll do some walking. But I didn't train this hard to let something like this get me down. Sunday will be fun. It will be a challenge. I will feel a full range of emotions- I'll feel hurt, excitement, joy, pain, but I'm not going to be disappointed. If I have to go slower than I had wanted, I'll use my extra energy to cheer on my fellow competitors. I saw this today on Slowtwitch and it is my new motto

Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it

Game on

Jodi, your continuing fabulous attitude will see you through. I'm getting excited just thinking about reading your race report. Can't imagine what your own excitement level must be!

I predict sometime during the day you will quit worrying about your time all together. This is when it will get really fun.

And finishing will be one of the greatest feelings of your life.

I entered the finish chute in 14:22. Trust me I was hoping to be faster. Who cares; I was fist pumping and hollering like (my) 3 year old.

Faster is for future races. Sunday is for joining the family

Good luck

I've found that taper does some weird things to your body. It could just be a flare. Regardless, you will do and will be great! I can't wait to hear about it!

Maybe this is a subcategory of one of those, but some percentage is what you make happen. Maybe that fits into the 90% somewhere. Hunker down, Jodi. Your body is reminding you of things. Take it all in stride and on race day, I bet you'll feel like 100 bucks!!

get your stretch on this week girl! Stretch those hips, stretch the it, and stretch the groin muscles. I will be sending your IT good vibes!

Hell Ya Game On Beyotch.

Taper offers you more time to pay attention to those little twinges and aches and such. Everything will fall into place come race day.

Looking forward to being a witness to your finish...be it on-line. Those damn cameras better work at the finish line.

Lurking/reading again... If you've never done a full marathon, there's really no way to explain what happens over the distance. A lot of people hurt themselves by trying to run too much and wind up burning out early. I'd say less than 5% of the people in the race do the whole thing at a run. Be smart and you can turn a 5:20 time into a 4:50 or so. I'd say try run 5, walk 1, repeat. More importantly, figure out what you're gonna do with the rest of your life (i.e., new goals and such) when you finish. My .02.

Hey Jodi, you don't know me but I've been following along here and on slowtwitch- I'm YVR K. Anyhow your training is all done and you're going to have an awesome race. We do this 'cause we chose to so no matter what comes your way chose to have a good time and you will. I always say that I often can't control what happens to me but I have complete control of how I react to it. You've got the right attitude. Now go out there, work your butt off, and have FUN!! As someone once said to me your first IM is the sprinkles on the icing on the cake!!

IT is a mirage.
The body will send out crazy signals all week. It is saying "relax, don't push me to hard, let me rest".
Come race day that stuff miraculously disappears.
